there was a LOT of pressure on petalite during the war since she was one of v few gems who rly understood human medical needs and could tend to human soldiers

her clairaudience takes her back there some days. she can still hear echoes sometimes, and its hard for her to tell if they’re real or not. being a nurse during the war was hard. humans bodies dont’ disappear, they just pile up and up and up

the instigating thought was :what if a gem had a gem nose like jasper,,,,but it was upside down and looked silly” where there u go

this is moissanite ! aka the substitute diamond

moissanites r rare and valuable gems. theyre made in the image of their diamond and hold a lot of decision making power, being as close to a diamond as u can get without,,,an actual diamond. moissanites arent nearly as huge as their diamond masters, but that they are made in the image of diamonds is no accident. for a moissanite, being flawed is worse than death; it is a poor refection on their diamond.

moissanites are most heavily utilized during times of political unrest when there is simply too much for three diamonds to do and oversee. they can travel widely and sometimes even make calls on behalf of their diamonds, and exist purely to enhance the power and influence of their respective creator. They’re towering, elegant gems made to reflect the authority and radiance of their diamond. they’re usually closely followed and admired by sapphires in particular, with whom they often work closely. a moissanites position is one of extreme stress, both from DIRECT pressure from a diamond and from the dependence of an enormous number of other gems. as a close inner circle with their diamond, moissanites all know each other extremely well

moissanites are natural born leaders with a high capacity for handling stress. they’re naturally diplomatic and stern, and don’t dote on anybody. they also have well-hidden mind control abilities. Thought hey may physically imitate their diamonds, they’re completely their own gems with thei own powers, personalities, and structures. the ability to control other gems is obviously a dangerous one meant to be used sparingly, but is kept secret from pretty much everybody except the diamonds. it’s an ace in the hole that you can’t really waste. moissanites mind control abilities are especially powerful because they’re more inception-y then puppet-y, planting and directing ideas so that other gems can’t even tell when they’re being controlled or influenced. this power has a lot of applications, from influencing political climates to outright shattering gems by systematically destroying their memories (although this is difficult to do and requires prolonged contact)

this moissanite in particular was left on earth by accident during the war. in the rush to escape, she,,,fell out of a ship. and by fell out of a ship, i mean she was shot while trying to board and plummeted back to earth.

she ended up deep underwater, barely avoiding corruption, though she was damaged and unable to properly,,,BE. though her gem was preserved, she herself could barely hold a form around it, and had to expend a lot of energy just to keep herself together, cracked and damaged, stuck in a loop of trying to get back up. her body is still there, but it’s completely still and stuck, too strong to be poofed, but not powerful enough to just jump back from such a wound, especially not at depths in the ocean that would crumple metal.  shes like a machine stuck in a loop and can’t get out of it, appearing in stead to be a statue covered in sea life

she ends up getting rattled loose by the cluster and summons the energy to eventually drag herself out of the ocean, although this takes,,,a really long time. the arrow stuck in her hasn’t been kind : (

she’s very used to…power. and to being served. having that power taken away from her shakes the very foundation of her understanding of her own existence. her power, position, and authority are all that previously made her identity. she gives orders liek they’re meant to be followed, but feels powerless when they arent, and has to exami her feelings about it are,,,,complicated

she won’t deign to shapeshift except in combat situations. her delicate appearance is a ruse; she’s an animal when she fights. dignity gets thrown to the wind when the diamond authority is on the line

its petalite !! been a while, huh ???

she’s a biotech gem ! made specifically to tend to human needs/understand human biology. they’re considered pretty worthless by gems in other fields (and are discontinued after the war anyway) but they’re actually vry talented gems ! just not talented at anything that anybody but pink diamond thought was worthwhile, haha

for one thing, petalites have clairaudience, or psychic hearing. they actually “hear” the needs and thoughts of others, particularly when focused. additionally, their touch has certain healing abilities; nothing physical, but they can induce calmness is their patients only through touch, which is especially handy w human patients who have a tendency to go into shock. They can use this ability to prevent heart attacks and avoid all kinds of medical problems, as well as calming patients who might otherwise die from excess stress due to pain or fear in addition to physical wounds. these abilities tend not to work as well on gems, but CAN be used

this particular petalite was employed by pink diamond before the war. she was one of the last of her kind made, and worked at the “human zoo,”providing medical care and counseling. at the time the zoo was still active-humans were still being abducted and brought there, and had memories of earth-and it was a violent, awful place to be. many humans died trying to escape, or were killed on accident due to the general lack of knowledge of their medical needs (which was where petalite came in)

after only a short time serving at the zoo (and seeing a lot of humans die, refusing to eat or on the operating table or worse, at their own hands) petalite lost faith in what pink diamond was doing with humans. the diamond she trusted seemed to see this as a novelty, and din’t care how many humans died as long as more were being brought in. it was especially difficult to petalite to swallow, given that she was naturally made to be empathetic towards humans and lacked the ability to “view them objectively the way her diamond wanted and the way a lot of gems were capable of doing

just before the rebellion started she began faking deaths to get humans back to earth. it was the only thing she could think of to do, even though it was pointless; she knew they’d either die there or die int he zoo. going back to earth was going back to a planet that was being colonized, and she knew they’d die, but they WANTED to go home, and she decided it was their right to die where they wanted

unfortunately, all the faked deaths resulted in a waning trust in her competency. she would have been replaced if the rebellion hadn’t started, and she would likely have faught against hr place being taken by a petalite who woudl likely not be as sympathetic towards humans as she was

even after the rebellion started she was stuck at the zoo for quite some time. unlike some other gems,s he lacked the physical strength to fight her way out of her post and was reluctant to leave the humans in the zoo behind. eventually she was discovered as a sympathizer and was chased off the ship anyway, which sort of made the choice for her

once on earth, she was accepted pretty quickly by a couple of humans she helped escape the zoo, though she was shocked to find them fighting int he rebellion. as a gem who knew about human biology and with healing abilities, she was considered extremely valuable by human troops and actually spent a lot more time in their camps than with her fellow gems. at the time her knowledge of human needs exceeded even human medical knowledge, so she could help quite a lot ! she never really saw the frontlines and mostly worked as a medic

she was bubbled by one of her own during a raid. since she was one of the few gems with advanced knowledge of humans she was considered too valuable (and too weak) to fight, so she was left behind. she was supposed to be unbubbled once the fight was over, but then,,the shit hit the fan, and she was left there, in an old military encampment, for 5000 years

remember when i said i was doing a goth femme gem ?? well here she is ! this is coffinite, the living fuel cell

shes currently locked away in the borderland surrounding what used to be russia. she resides in that wasteland, trapped in a downed air raid weapon, an enormous light cannon

it has long since lost its ability to operate, but serves as her home-by-force. her gem, damaged and kept inside an ancient gem fuel cell, once powered the enormous vessel.

she’s highly radioactive. like rubies, she produces heat, but on a much, much larger scale, stretching between extreme temperatures into raw energy. her body is quite weak and brittle, which means she would easily succumb ont he battlefield-she is certainly not a soldier.

coffinites, in spite of their vaguely regal appearance, are pretty low class and typically used to fuel large ships or weapons. their radioactivity has little effect on gems, but can be extremely harmful to humans; although being around her is harmless, touching her heated skin can cause radiation burns and radiation sickness after extended exposure, resulting in hair loss, hemorrhaging, and eventually death.

she’s been trapped in that cannon for a thousand years, fueling non-functional weaponry. she’s stuck in a loop of exhaustion, unsleeping and constantly being wrung to her very limits byt he machine she was forcibly attached to.

that being said, a long time has passed. she’s not who she used to be. in spite of her dark, tired appearance, she’s actually quite sweet and guileless. she once hated earth and humans with it, but her loneliness has driven her to a change of heart. by nature she’s actually quite kind and sweet/cheery, though a bit morbid

she gets introduced via stevens dreams, invading them with a sense of extreme exhaustion and fear, just trying to draw anyone who could possibly hear her closer.

after being released, she turns out to be pretty sweet, just,,awkward, and fully embraces her new life with joy and exuberance. she tends to sound accidentally threatening, and it doesn’t help that shes, like, SUPER obsessed with the way humans die. her attitude is fairly positive and carefree in spite of how tired she is, left to rot on earth by homeworld.

her most notable ability is nearly too dangerous to be used-to humans, at least. she can essentially detonate her light form in an explosion of heat and energy nearly a mile wide-it’s huge and devastating, but would leave nothing but, like, a horrible irradiated shithole behind. plus, it’s really draining for her to do that, and will poof her automatically for a long period of time, which leaves her quite vulnerable.

she can melt her way through stone and metal, but just, like, clocking her on the head w a rock will knock her out. it takes her a really long time to reform and she’s quite bad as a fighter, so if u can catch her before she detonates, ur in the clear.

her summoned weapon is a sot of cattle prod which releases large amounts of energy and is p much completely paralyzing to gems, though it tends to just tickle or annoy humans
