Pigs & Battleships, 1961, dir. Imamura Shôhei
The opening shots of this film establish a kind of place very, very different from the typical images of middle-class life as seen in most previous films. I can’t help but wonder whether or not the text in the fourth shot – “This story is entirely fictional” – is meant to be taken as an ironic phrase, given how documentary-like the shot is.
