Today’s aesthetic: Optimus Prime completelywrecking Megatron’s shit in these pages from Naoto Tsushima’s TRANSFORMERS: ALL SPARK manga. This might just be the biggest smackdown Prime’s ever laid on Megs outside of a live-action movie – Starscream’s certainly loving it, anyway!
There’s a lot I like about the Megaman comic. It’s done a really good job of looking at the ethical implications about robots and their desires and interactions. It’s a very Asimov-inspired look at artificial intelligence that is made for kids to access without talking down to them.
I also just love how Megaman acts as a hero. Violence is a burden to him. He doesn’t treat fighting as a triumph, but rather a tragedy. The victory here is Rock’s, but nothing about the last panel feels empowering.
The “shocking thing” is not always in [6][7]. You can put shocking things in all three splashes if you wanted. Here is an example of what you were looking to do.
The [6][7] 2-page splash is not always “the most important” and not always “the big reveal”. More often it’s the point of no return, the darkest point of the story, commonly referred to as “the belly of the whale”. It works best with a chekhov’s gun--a clue at the beginning and/or the immediate [1] introduction of the problem/mystery which goes off in [12].
