Hi! I’ve been breaking my head trying to find means of communication in my fantasy world but I don’t seem to quite get it. Could you give me some help?
I’m not really sure what you mean. Do you mean long distance communication, like an alternative to phones?
If so, here are some options:
Courier/Messenger – this person hand-delivered information, letters, etc. For distances under a mile or two, they generally went on foot. Otherwise they went on horseback and sometimes even by boat/ship.
Birds – in real life, carrier pigeons have been used to deliver messages across long distances. In fantasy novels, ravens, crows, owls, and sparrows are also sometimes used.
Magic – if magic exists in your story, there are any number of options for long distance communication. The sky is the limit, really.
Signals – smoke, fire, light reflected off shiny surfaces, etc. These can be used along with rudimentary codes to transmit information across short distances, especially where there are high vantage points available.
